Craft experience day

The Craft Experience Day on 15 March 2025 in the Historic Village of Zwickau is an excellent opportunity to discover numerous traditional trades and gain an in-depth understanding of ancient crafts. Participants in this open programme will have the chance to get to know various trades such as blacksmithing, clay construction, carpentry, roofing and stonemasonry at first hand. This event is not just a demonstration of craft skills, but also offers an interactive experience where visitors can try out techniques for themselves under the guidance of experienced craftsmen. Particularly noteworthy are the hands-on stations that allow participants to actively take part in the various work processes and develop a feel for the challenges and aesthetics of traditional craftsmanship. In addition to the practical experience, an extensive theoretical programme also provides in-depth insights. Experienced master craftsmen from the various trades share their extensive knowledge and many years of experience and provide information about the history and development of their craft. In addition, information is provided on vocational training in the skilled trades, which can offer guidance to young people and career changers. All in all, the Crafts Experience Day offers a valuable opportunity to discover the diversity and importance of craftsmanship and to test one’s own skills.

PROGRAMME & SCHEDULE

Music: Accompanying live performances between the stations create a relaxed atmosphere.

Catering: Culinary variety from the region: roast with bread rolls, sandwiches, cakes and drinks.

13:00 – Welcome and short introduction

13:30 – 16:00: Hands-on workshops

Stations: Experience and try out: Master craftspeople from various trades invite you.

Station 1: Carpentry – introduction to woodworking techniques.
Station 2: Blacksmiths – forging simple objects
Station 3: Roofing workshop – everything but roof damage
Station 4: Stonemasonry – Chisel, pestle and co.
Station 5: Building trade – Small stonemasonry work and masonry techniques.

16:30 – 17:30: Craft speed dating

An interactive format for young people and their parents:

In small groups, participants switch between the master craftsman positions
All master craftsmen’s centres present their trade in a few minutes and answer questions.
Support is provided by a FAQ list containing specific questions on training, career opportunities and requirements.

17:45 – 18:00: Conclusion and farewell

Notice:
The event will take place in all weathers. Warm clothing and sturdy shoes are recommended. All materials for the workshops will be provided. Admission is free!
