Projekt 46
Cultural and social freedom. A place to try things out. A space in the city centre where the diversity of Zwickau’s (sub)culture is publicly visible to everyone and is part of it. Because there is always someone or something there. Such a space is (was) missing in the city centre of Zwickau. There are only mainstream spaces or pubs that are hardly attractive, especially for young people, and whose prices are not affordable. Projekt 46 aims to change this.
The large shop at Hauptstraße 46 was affected by vacancy and stood empty for large parts of the year. It only shines in the glow of candle arches when the “Spar-Land” shop is open at Christmas time. Nevertheless, initiatives, groups and associations are always looking for spaces to realise themselves, to meet and to be visible to others, not somewhere behind walls and in peripheral districts. This shop offers the opportunity. For a few weeks back in 2022, it was a hub for many people who came with enriching ideas and realised them with a great deal of commitment – a kind of trial run! Since 2023, it has been a permanent location – a space for discussing social issues (e.g. feminism, inclusion, integration), making subculture and urban history visible through exhibitions and cultural offerings (readings, cinema, artistic activities).
A group of actors from civil society, the subculture scene and associations has been formed as a result of initial activities in 2022. This group meets – open to all – every 1st Monday of the month to plan content. There is a public calendar in which you can sign up if you are planning something in the space. What’s more, the shop’s large shop windows mean that it is already open and should appeal to people!
