Who regulates? The market or the state?

It is one of the questions of the modern age. How much should the state intervene in the economy?

Two approaches have become established in modern market economies: regulatory policy and interventionism. While supporters of regulatory policy merely want to set the framework for economic activity (preventing monopolies is just one of the buzzwords here), advocates of interventionism want to regulate more.

What is the best solution? Prof Dr Wrobel from the WHZ has a clear position on this. As a liberal, he is a supporter of regulatory measures, but also recognises arguments in favour of interventionist approaches. He expressed this clearly in his input and subsequent discussion on 4 February in the Barterre of the Alter Gasometer. It was the second event in the new “Wissen machtZ!” lecture series.

Just a few days before the general election, it is of course particularly interesting to see what approaches the parties are pursuing. Nothing surprising here. The CDU and FDP are more in favour of regulatory measures, while the SPD, Greens and Left Party are on the side of interventionism. The AfD and BSW have elements of both economic schools of thought in their election programmes.

Many thanks to mr. Prof Dr Wrobel and all the guests present.

This measure is co-financed with tax revenue on the basis of the budget adopted by the Saxon state parliament.
